40 years isn't really that long ago in the scheme of things when looking at technology. Intel Corporation recently marked a milestone of 40 years of delivering on technology that Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce started in July of 1968. The two had worked together at Fairchild Semiconductor, before that at Shockley and left the company to create Intel. The Integrated Electronics company began work with the 1st microprocesor delivered in 1971 with the 4004.
Most of us that have played with technology over the years have had our hands in a 286 based system and quickly saw the 386 and later 486 based computer. Intel over the years has moved into many different areas including Motherboards, Modems, network cards, flash memory and embedded technology.
Rather than a huge celebratory pat on the back, Intel has decided on the 40th Anniversary to give back to the community and reach out to areas where technology may not be as prevalent. Paul Otellini, the CEO for Intel, put together an idea for the 70 computer clubhouses in 21 different countries to work on a digital mural dubbed the World Mural Project to promote volunteerism. The Mural, which can be viewed online, had children and teens share the vision of where technology could be going in the next 40 years and include those thoughts with the mural. It's actually very impressive to see and select the projections of these young minds by country or region.
The Intel Computer Clubhouse project is an afterschool program that provides a safe environment for youngsters wanting to learn more about technology through reading, instruction and hands on. In our area of Southern Arizona, there are a couple of locations as Official Intel Computer Clubhouses and many more throughout the globe. The organization works because of sponsorships and volunteers.
Intel has develped some exciting technology to allow those in Science and Medicine to work faster, Law Enforcement to solve crimes with technology and of course, Games to Run better! With the future at Intel still working closely to Gordon Moores "Law" the technology continues to grow. The Atom will push forward the move to Ultra Mobile PC's and embedded technology in everyday items. Currently Asus has the Atom as part of its Eee 901 and 1000 Ultra-Mobile Pc.
Congrats to Intel on 40 years of shaping our tech world. Tune in and listen to our discussion with Bill Calder on Intel!
